Digitalisation
Goal: to leverage digital data and visualise it to provide useful business intelligence
Why is Digitalisation Important to your Organisation?

Correctly implemented, digitalisation enables you to leverage your digital assets and visualise the data to provide the knowledge required to support business decisions. At its heart is the integration of the IT and OT systems. It is often referred to as Smart Operations and it is the next logical expansion of the computer revolution, often referred to as Industry 4.0 or the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

What is the Challenge?

Digitalisation lacks a clear definition and means different things to different people. No clear standards exist to provide guidance on how to manage and implement it. Legacy systems often have data stranded in silos that is difficult to integrate. Often there is too much irrelevant data so it needs to be presented to the user in a meaningful way. Increased connectivity increases the efficiency of operations but it also exposes the cybersecurity attack surface area.

What is the Solution?

We can apply the common lifecycle approach used in cybersecurity, alarm management and functional safety to digitalisation as follows: create a plan for managing digitalisation, analysis and assessment, specify the requirements, design the system, install and commission, operate and maintain, monitor & assess performance, manage change, and decommission.
